Crunch Fitness

An improvement to a fitness application based on the users' needs.

ROLE

Research / UX - UI / Branding

01

Research

Heuristic

Usability

The app allows users to find a gym, manage favorites, send a friend a guest pass, reserve and cancel classes plus book their bikes.

Functionality

It loads slow. Also, it would be nice for the app to support the Apple Watch. The app doesn't fit in the iPhone X screen.

Accessibility

The choice of font size and icons is decent. But there is text on the image which makes the copy hard to read.

Simplicity

Although there are some repetitive functions that confuse the user, the app is easy to navigate and understand.

Fun to Use

The app has poor visual design and zero interactions. It also needs improvement in content writing to encourage users to workout more.

Presentation

Branding can be improved very much. A redesign can represent more of an exercising vibe and a more modern look.

Goals for the Redesign

Improve information architecture

The view of the room on the camera and the light lines are distracting and the user doesn't pay attention to the messages. So I added icons and CTA to make sure the user will notice the message.

Ability to search other locations and classes

Each plant may need specific care based on the environment and especially when the plant is struggling with a problem and the owner looks for specific help.

Improve visual design and integrate brand

Right now there are many applications, and each application does a different thing. There is a need for one application that answers all the needs of a house plant owner.

Target Audience Analysis

Crunch Fitness App target audience divided by 3 groups.
The motivated group is the primary target audience for the app.

Active athletes

They go to the gym every day and are cautious about their diet. They are knowledgeable about human body anatomy and standard ways of working out. They usually have a specific goal in mind. They encourage other people to work out and give them advice about how to live healthily.

Motivated

They don't stick to a general schedule for workouts, but they are motivated and cautious about their health. They don't have a specific goal in mind, but they care about their health.
They read blogs and surf the web for information. They participate and follow some challenges being set by fitness bloggers.

Dreamers

They know they should be cautious about their health and looks, and they would always want to go to the gym and feel guilty for not working out or exercising. But even if they register at a gym, they stop going after 3 sessions.

User Experience

Persona

"As an artist working in SF, who goes to the gym every day, I need an easy way to find Yoga classes and book them. That way I can make sure when I get to the gym, the class is not full."

Paula

30 | Artist | San Francisco
Paula lives in Cupertino. Her work is in San Francisco.
She often goes to the Sunnyvale Crunch Fitness gym, which is close to her apartment. It’s a Monday morning and She wants to go to the gym before work.

After she wakes up, she opens the app to find a Zumba class either in a gym close to her office or in her regular gym, today before 11 am.

Define Problem And Sitemap

In this redesigns, I relied on primary and secondary resource research methods to find and focus on some of the tasks that the users were the most frustrated about, at the time.

Out of 5 user stories, I chose the most complex one to be able to design an architecture and design a simple experience for their primary need, which is Finding and reserving classes.

In a team of 3, we created a sitemap for the 3 defined tasks based on Paula’s story.

Scenario

Imagine you are Paula. You live in Cupertino, CA and work in San Francisco. It's a Monday morning and you want to find a Zumba class either in a location close to her office in New Montgomery SF, or her regular gym location, today before noon.

Subtask One

Find the location

Subtask Two

Find a 10 am class

Subtask Three

Choose the class

Find and filter the location

  • Open the app.
  • Types in her office address.
  • Sees 2 results listed and sees location pins on the map.
  • Zooms in to the map to decide which one is closest to her office.
  • Chooses the closest one and clicks next.

outcome

Location adds to the saved locations and she sees the result for both locations.
